Off-duty NY officer hospitalized after stabbing

By Michael Frazier
Newsday

NEW YORK — An off-duty New York police officer is expected to survive after being stabbed early yesterday on the streets of Chelsea, police said.

The officer, whose name wasn't released, had just left a nightclub when he got into a heated confrontation with three men about 3 a.m., as he and some friends stopped for hot dogs on 27th Street.

The three men apparently said something disrespectful to women accompanying the officer, a police source said.

During the argument, the officer was slapped and one of the men plunged a knife into his stomach. All three of the men fled after the attack. Police said they had no detailed description of the officer's assailants.

The officer was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan after the stabbing. His condition was unknown yesterday, but police officials said he was expected to survive the wound.
