REDDING, Calif. — The 4-year-old son of a Redding police officer who died from an apparently accidental shooting last week used his father's service weapon, authorities said.

The shooting occurred last Thursday afternoon at the Shasta Lake home of Redding police officer Jason Rhoads. Hunter Rhoads was alone in the master bedroom closet when the accident occurred, according to a release from the Shasta County Sheriff's Department.

The boy was taken to the Mercy Medical Center in Redding with a gunshot wound to the head. He was later pronounced dead, officials said.

The results of the sheriff's department's investigation will be turned over to the Shasta County District Attorney's Office after it is finished. That should be done in the next week or two, said Capt. Dave Compomizzo of the sheriff's department.
